Maca, also known as Peruvian ginseng, is a plant that grows particularly in the high Andes mountains of Peru. It contains various minerals and plant sterols and has traditionally been used to heal various conditions, especially those related to sexual dysfunction and energy deficiency. Among its other functions, maca has been primarily used for increasing fertility and stamina, improving cognitive function, enhancing libido, and alleviating symptoms of menopause. Recent research has shown that maca's efficacy comes from a chemical compound called p-methoxybenzyl isothiocyanate, which is known as a natural sexual stimulant.



Black maca is known to be the most powerful variety, containing both sweet and slightly bitter flavors that enhance energy and stamina. It also contains a high amount of natural iodine, which can help prevent thyroid disorders.


Enhancing Libido and Energy


Traditionally, Incan warriors believed that maca enhanced energy and stamina. They consumed it before going into battle to keep their bodies strong and prepared for intense physical activity. When the Spanish conquistadors invaded the Incan civilization, they quickly learned about the benefits of maca and even valued it as highly as gold. In animal studies using rats, maca was found to increase sexual desire. Researchers believe that the high concentration of essential amino acids, such as tyrosine and phenylalanine, along with maca extracts, contribute to its effectiveness in increasing sexual desire.


Improving Sperm Function


Research has shown that maca can increase sperm count in normal rats and also in rats exposed to high altitudes or those with pathological conditions such as oxalate or malathion injections. Black maca, along with a small amount of cream (gold) maca, has been found to be the most effective in increasing sperm count and vitality, while red maca has no effect.
