It is not only the matter of looking good. It actually affects on many factors of your health and shortens lives. Obesity has played in causing the divergent trends in life expectancy. Numerous studies have documented the ways in which being overweight or obese damages health. The most common effects include diabetes; high blood pressure; heart disease; gallstones; and certain cancers, such as colorectal cancer, breast cancer in women, etc.

Cardiovascular Diseases including heart diseases

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is a condition in which a waxy substance called plague builds up and blocks arteries. These plagues form when levels of body fat, especially the “bad” cholesterol increases. Over time, this plague can harden or clot arteries, blocking the blood flow to heart muscle. This could eventually lead to heart failure where your heart muscle is not working. The risk of coronary heart disease increases when the person is being obese.

High Blood Pressure

If the person is overweight or obese, there is much higher chance of having high blood pressure.Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. If blood pressure rises, it forces heart to work harder, damaging body in many ways. Effect on the body includes stressed/damaged arteries and blood vessels, and brain stroke.

Type 2 Diabetes

The body breaks down food into glucose and then carries it to cells throughout the body. The cells use a hormone called insulin to turn the glucose into energy. In type 2 diabetes, the body’s cells don’t use insulin properly. At first, the body reacts by making more insulin. Over time, however, the body can’t make enough insulin to control its blood sugar level.Diabetes is a leading cause of early death, CHD, stroke, kidney disease, and blindness. Most people who have type 2 diabetes are overweight.

Cancer

Obesity not only increases the risk of some cancers such as Breast, Colon, Uterine, Kidney, Pancreatic, Thyroid and Gall bladder, but it also prevents the effect ofmany cancer treatments. Cancer patients often experience weight gain after cancer diagnosis, most commonly among patients undergoing chemotherapy; this could further increase the risk of obesity and difficulties of cancer treatment.

Osteoarthritis

Being overweight or obese raises your risk of Osteoarthritis which isa common joint problem of the knees, hips, and lower back. Osteoarthritis commonly occurs if the tissue that protects the joints degrades. This tissue usually wears away with age and activity, but extra weight puts higher pressure on joints, accelerating the degradation of joint and joint pain.
