Hawthorn

Hawthorn is a spiny bush or small tree. It has strong-smelling white flowers and bright red spherical fruit containing one to three nuts. These have been traditionally used for diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Most notably, hawthorn is known to treat both low and high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, and high cholesterol .

How it works is still under a lot of research.  The most promising explanation is that hawthorn helps improve the amount of blood pumped out of the heart during contractions. It widens the blood vessels and increases the transmission of nerve signals (Pittler MH, Schmidt K, Ernst E. 2003). Proanthocyanidin, a major component in hawthorn, is an antioxidant that helps lower cholesterol  and relax blood vessels throughout the body.

Garlic bulb

Garlic is traditionally used for many conditions related to the heart and blood system. Since around 1500 BC, healers in China and India have used this odiferous bulb as a blood thinner. Among all conditions, including high blood pressure, coronary heart disease and heart attack, garlic’s most effective contribution is in slowing the development of atherosclerosis. This, in turn, seems to reduce blood pressure. Hydrogen sulfide, a gas generated when garlic is digested, works as an intracellular signalling compound, providing a protective benefit for the heart (Borek C, 2006).

Grapeskin

In general, grapes contain lots of polyphenols, well-known antioxidants that help prevent heart disease. It is generally believed that moderate consumption of red wine reduces the likelihood of developing heart disease, the benefit being mainly from the polyphenols in grapes. In particular, these polyphenols  inhibit the protein, tyrosine kinase, which suppresses the production of a protein causing blood vessels to constrict (Young JF, et al. 2000).

Camellia sinesis

Camellia sinensis is a species of evergreen shrub whose leaves and leaf buds have been used to produce tea. In Chinese medicine, this herb is used to improve longevity by stimulating the functions of the heart and strengthening the immune system (Nantz MP, et al. 2009). Natural substances in this tea help lower cholesterol and prevent blood clots, therefore lowering the risk of heart disease.
